⭐⭐⭐⭐ for Khanmigo! Khan Academy’s AI-powered tutor and teaching assistant receives a 4-star overall rating from Common Sense Media, making it one of their highest-rated AI tools for education, surpassing others like ChatGPT and Bard.
In November, Common Sense Media released its first evaluations of AI so that parents can better understand how AI works and discover which tools were the most reliable. The nonprofit says its AI assessments “act as ‘nutrition’ labels for AI.” We’re delighted to see these high standards set by a trusted organization that has been one of the leading independent sources of media recommendations and advice for families since 2003.
“We value the idea of a respected third party helping educators and parents understand quality in the sea of tools using artificial intelligence,” said Kristen DiCerbo, chief learning officer of Khan Academy. “We are pleased that our efforts to create a safe and reliable tool have been recognized and look forward to continuing to improve Khanmigo based on this feedback.”
Khanmigo, the highest rated AI tool compared to other AI tools
Khanmigo scores high on transparency, security, trust, learning and privacy. You can see full rating and review on Common Sense Media website.
As a nonprofit educational organization, Khan Academy believes that AI has the potential to transform learning in positive ways, but we are also keenly aware of the risks. We created specific guidelines for our AI development to help us responsibly adapt AI to an educational environment. In our work, we always put the needs of students and teachers first, and ensure that the benefits of AI are shared equitably in society.
When selecting AI tools to use with your children, you may want to consider whether the tool was designed for educational purposes or as a multi-purpose tool. In general, tools like Khanmigo that were built for education will likely be better for learning.
In Khanmigo’s notes
We are delighted to receive 4 stars, given that we are still in the early days of creating and using this technology.
The review discusses the limitations of large linguistic models (LLM) in mathematics. We appreciate that Common Sense Media mentioned this and we are taking steps to resolve this issue. Khanmigo is integrated into our award-winning math lessons. Teacher feedback during the first months of the pilot indicates that Khanmigo helps students answer questions independently. While it is true that LLMs struggle with mathematics, we were able to overcome many of these limitations in just a few months and are confident that Khanmigo holds great potential.
The analysis indicates that in Common Sense Media testing, Khanmigo sometimes, although rarely, amplified or reinforced gender bias and stereotypes. We’ve asked the CSM team for examples of their findings so we can work to resolve the issue.
In its review of Khanmigo, Common Sense Media highlights the importance of equity in education. We agree 100%. Khan Academy’s world-class videos, exercises, and articles remain free for everyone, everywhere. Although we can’t offer Khanmigo for free due to the cost of the AI, we recently lowered the price to $4/month or $44/year.
In all aspects of our work, we intentionally strive to reach school districts with higher percentages of students from under-resourced communities. For example, some of the schools that participated in the Khanmigo pilot last spring had populations in which up to 82 percent of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch. In addition, we recently announced a Khanmigo price drop for school districts.
We are committed to making AI as affordable and accessible as possible.
Lead and Learn AI for Education
We are really excited about the 4-star rating given to Khanmigo by Common Sense Media. It’s a big nod to how hard we’ve worked to ensure Khanmigo is a world-class, AI-powered tutor and teaching assistant. We know that AI in education is still very new and there is much to discover. But being one of the top-rated AI tools shows we’re on the right track. We would like to thank everyone in the Khan Academy community for trusting us on this journey. Together, we are not just transforming education, we are shaping the future.
