ISLAMABAD: Faisal Karim Kundi, the information secretary of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), said Thursday that the party president Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will be the candidate for the post of prime minister, while his father, former president Asif Ali Zardariwill be nominated for the post of president in the upcoming elections, Dawn reported.
The statement follows recent remarks by Zardari, who had indicated that the party is yet to finalize its candidate for the prime minister’s post. When asked if Bilawal could be the candidate, Zardari mentioned that Bilawal, himself or Khurshid Shah could be potential candidates.
“Bilawal can be the (candidate) and I can be too… Khurshid Shah is also saying that he can become (the prime minister),” he said.
At a press briefing in Islamabad, Faisal Kundi confirmed Bilawal’s candidacy for the prime minister’s seat, expressing the party’s desire to replicate the scenario of the 2018 elections and see Asif Zardari become president again, according to Dawn.
“Our wish will be to replay 2018 and make Asif Zardari the president,” he added, possibly referring to the 2008 elections, when Zardari was elected president.
Kundi stressed the PPP’s position that the elections “should not be delayed” beyond February 8, 2024.
“It is better than selection and becoming a laadla (favorite) that we sit in opposition,” Kundi said in an apparent reference to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.
He criticized the PML-N’s reluctance to participate in the elections, calling them “armchair politics” and questioned why a party claiming to be the largest in the country was avoiding the electoral process.
Kundi compared the popularity of the rallies organized by Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam with those led by Bilawal, saying the nation was in favor of the PPP. He said the party was “very ready” for the next general election.
Regarding reports of a possible ban on social media during the elections, Kundi opposed it, saying such a ban would go against freedom of expression and that the public had the right to express your opinions.
Addressing the recent acquittals of Nawaz Sharif in corruption cases, Kundi criticized the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), saying it had historically been used for political engineering. He called for clarification whether NAB was wrong in the past or is wrong today, stressing that NAB is an institution and is not owned by anyone, as reported by Dawn.
“The same NAB used to file cases against Nawaz Sharif and is now acquitting him one after the other,” he remarked, adding, “Public should be informed if NAB was wrong in the past or if he is wrong today. NAB is not anyone’s property but an institution.”
Condemning the recent terror attack in Dera Ismail Khan, in which terrorists attacked a military compound, resulting in the death of 23 soldiers, Kundi reiterated the PPP’s call for the implementation of the National Action Plan.
Referring to the Supreme Court’s consideration of a presidential referral after more than a decade, Kundi called for justice for Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, saying those involved in his martyrdom should be punished, regardless of their role as bureaucrats, judges or lawyers, Dawn said. reported.
