Mid Roadone of the most popular image generation AI services in the world today with over 17.5 million users on its server on the separate messaging app Discord, has started testing a version “ alpha” from its website, mi-voyage.comwhich will allow users to generate images directly there instead of using Discord.
THE Mid-term Alpha A website with an AI image generation field was first spotted yesterday by keen users such as Nick Saint-Pierre (@NickFloats)who shared screenshots and videos of it on X.
Midjourney confirmed today in its Discord announcement channel that it has “begun testing an alpha version of the website that includes image creation”, however, the company noted that the alpha version was limited to ” people who have created more than 10,000 images in Midjourney.
“Don’t worry, we’ll make it available to more people in the coming month! » » adds the ad.
So users can see how many generations they have and if they have exceeded the 10,000 image threshold, they can first log into Midjourney on Discord and type the slash command, “/info” in one of the channels or directly to the Midjourney Discord bot to receive an updated count.
Even though I had only generated 8,383 images for my lifetime use and 5,041 images generated in Midjourney’s slower, less GPU-intensive “relaxed” mode, I was still able to access the site myself Web Midjourney Alpha and test it.
What it looks like and how it works
The website’s interface is minimalist and clean, with plenty of “white space” and launches with an “Explore” tab displaying other users’ public builds. There is a blank rectangular text bar marked “Imagine” at the top with a plus, where eligible users can directly enter a prompt.
On the far right of this bar is an icon of horizontal lines and circles representing dials, which the user can click to launch a visual interface for adjusting their prompt settings.
This is a major change from the current Discord version of Midjourney, which requires users to enter various jargon text commands in their actual prompts.
So now using the web interface, instead of typing “–ar 4:3” for a landscape image, the user can simply click on the “Landscape” option in this prompt settings menu and it automatically applies this setting, without adding any visible elements. text when prompted by the user.
Additionally, using the buttons on the left side rail, the user can tap the “Photo” icon and see a reverse timeline view of all their builds done on the service since it started, arranged in a grid and grouped by date. This view also shows the user’s current image generation tasks.
Bring the competition to its knees
In all, it bears a striking resemblance to Electric Visualthe rival image generation web service based on the open source Stable Diffusion model and aimed at professional designers, launched last week.
However, Midjourney has the advantage of having what many users consider to be a superior image generation model, and the Alpha website contains a tab marked “Likes” showing all images that the user has already “hearts” on Discord.
It further includes a quick search bar below the image generation bar and to the right, where the user can type in a quick keyword – for example “steampunk” – and see all public images generated by others users with this quick word.
There is a “sun/moon” icon button in the lower left corner that the user can use to switch between light and dark modes, and a “thumbs up” button that allows users to participate in a ranking project. participatory images to choose their preference between two images proposed by the Midjourney team, designed to help further improve the quality of their AI model.
However, one limitation I noticed is that images generated using the web interface not seem to be repopulating in my Midjourney Discord Bot chat, which means that for users who switch back and forth, the web interface is the only one that keeps all image generations from both sources.
Still, overall this is an impressive alpha release and will no doubt make Midjourney more accessible to a wider potential audience. For now, however, you should still log in with your Discord username. Midjourney is also one of several AI image generation services and AI companies more generally facing lawsuits from artists and creators for alleged copyright infringement regarding its use images intended for the public to train their models.
