James McCaffrey, the voice actor best known for voicing the film’s main character Max Payne video game series and a recurring role in Save me, is dead. He was 65 years old.
According to multiple sources, McCaffrey died Sunday after a battle with cancer. McCaffrey was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer affecting the bone marrow and white blood cells, according to TMZwho was the first to report the news.
His wife, actress Rochelle Boström, said The Hollywood Reporter that McCaffrey died at his home in Larchmont, New York. His manager remarked Deadline that the actor was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death.
Surroundings star Kevin Dillon shared a tribute to his late friend on Instagramwriting: “We were lucky to know you. My best friend, we will miss you 🙏🏼.”
McCaffrey’s earliest roles date back to the late ’80s and early ’90s, with his signature project being New York infiltrated, Fox’s cult classic crime drama. He played the recurring role of Captain Arthur O’Byrne in season 3. He later starred in the NBC action series, Viperin its original iteration, which only aired for one season in 1994. McCaffrey reprized his role in the Revival series a few years later.
Over a 35-year career, McCaffrey became a familiar face on episodic television, appearing on Sex and the City, The Big Easy, Glades, Revenge, White Collar, Madam Secretary, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit And Law and order: criminal intent, Bull And Suits, among many others.
His most memorable and haunting role came on the acclaimed FX drama. Save me. McCaffrey played Jimmy Keefe, a New York firefighter who died on September 11 and appears as a ghost to his cousin, firefighter Tommy Gavin (Dennis Leary). McCaffrey’s Jimmy appeared throughout the show’s seven seasons, serving as a conscience and emotional touchstone for Leary’s troubled and grieving firefighter.
In addition to his on-screen roles, McCaffrey is well known for his voice work, particularly in the world of video games. He voiced Max Payne – the vengeful former NYPD officer turned DEA agent whose wife and daughter were murdered by drug addicts – in video game episodes released in 2001, 2003, 2008 and 2012.
In addition to his wife, McCaffrey is survived by the couple’s daughter, Tiarnan.
