An anonymous and inventive Nintendo fan recreated the Game Boy classic The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening with a twist that separates it from the official 2019 remaster. The widescreen Windows remake adds high frame rate support and lets you zoom in to view more, or even all, of Koholint Island. But the game may not last long because Nintendo has a habit of crush copyright infringing fan gameseven when it’s lovingly designed and offered for free like this one.
Spotted on X (next to a writing by Polygon), Link’s Awakening DX HD is a love letter to the 1993 original and its 1998 color reissue. The unofficial port recreates the original episode of Zelda with support for 120 frames per second (FPS), which the developer describes as adding “unparalleled fluidity.”
The homebrew port also removes the transitions from the original, which loaded a new screen every time you moved to the next one (old school Zelda style). In this version, the camera pans smoothly as Links walks around the island, which we imagine was no small task for the anonymous creator.
The zoom level, available in the game settings menu, allows you to display a scale of 1:1, half or third of a pixel, allowing you to see the entire island simultaneously. Nor is it a static perspective. Each visible section is fully activated (as if Link was there in the original) and teeming with enemies. You can move around the scenic vistas, swing your sword at Moblins, and search for the next task without stopping to look at a static game map.
The game’s developer released the ’90s love letter anonymously, likely to protect it (at least for a while) from Nintendo’s attacks. happy with disputes Legal team. The 24 MB Link’s Awakening DX HD is a free download on itch.io, but we don’t expect him to stay there much longer. Either way, you can watch a snippet of gameplay in the video below.
I discovered that there is a port of Zelda Link’s Awakening for PC and I am surprised. This version not only offers widescreen support, but the game now runs on a single screen without any transitions and you can zoom out to see more of the outside world. pic.twitter.com/yQBbbFeytn
