These honey butter pull apart buns are absolutely delicious and you’ll never believe how easy they are to make! Just 5 simple ingredients and these homemade dinner rolls come together in just 30 minutes, no need to wait for the bread to rise. I’ve seen this viral 2-ingredient dough recipe everywhere, so I had to try it for myself! The secret ingredient? Greek yogurt! I also mixed in some fresh herbs and honey, which makes these rolls perfect for the holidays. The result is a buttery, crispy exterior while being warm and fluffy on the inside. So, so good and honestly I couldn’t believe how easy they were to make!
Why you will love this recipe
- A lighter version of classic dinner rolls!
- Easily made with just self-rising flour, high-protein Greek yogurt, honey and fresh herbs.
- No yeast is needed in these rolls, so they come together very quickly.
- This recipe also makes delicious pizza dough!
Ingredients you will need
- self rising flour – this is a mixture of all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt that allows these rolls to rise without using yeast. If you don’t have self-rising flour, you can easily make your own by using regular all-purpose flour and adding 2 teaspoons of baking powder. You can also make these gluten-free rolls using gluten-free self-rising flour (or see the instructions below for how to make your own).
- Greek yogurt – I used full fat plain Greek yogurt which adds a good amount of protein to these buns, but you could also use vanilla flavored yogurt as that would give these buns an extra touch of sweetness. Sour cream will also work in place of yogurt if you prefer to use that.
- Honey – adding honey both into the buns and brushed on top makes these buns sweet, cozy and delicious!
- butter – you only need about a tablespoon of melted butter to brush on the buns once they come out of the oven to give them that buttery flavor we love in a bun. I used unsalted butter because I also like to sprinkle a little flaky sea salt on top.
- fresh herbs – I used a mixture of fresh sage and fresh thyme in these rolls, but rosemary would be great too! We add fresh herbs to the dough and sprinkle on top once they are cooked.
- salt – this is necessary for seasoning the rolls and I like to sprinkle a little extra flaky sea salt after baking!
How to Make Honey Butter Buns
- Prepare the dough. In a large mixing bowl, using a spatula (or you can use a stand mixer using the dough hook), combine the self-rising flour, Greek yogurt, honey, fresh herbs and salt until combined and a dough forms. If your dough is too sticky, feel free to add a little flour until the dough is easy to work with.
- Form rolls. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and put a little flour on your hands so that the dough does not stick. Knead the dough several times until you obtain a nice smooth ball of dough then cut it into 12 equal sections with a cookie cutter or a knife. Roll each section of dough into balls and arrange them in a prepared small 11×7 baking dish, making sure they are just touching to make pull-apart style rolls.
- Cook. Place the buns in the oven and bake at 375 degrees F for 30 to 35 minutes (mine is perfect at 32 minutes), until the tops are golden brown. Whisk together melted butter, honey and fresh herbs and brush the tops of the buns. Sprinkle with a little flaky sea salt, if desired, and separate the rolls to serve hot. Appreciate!
To easily make gluten-free self-rising flour, simply mix 1 cup 1-to-1 gluten-free pastry flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. You just want to make sure that the flour you use has xantham gum in the ingredients, as it is an important baking binder needed to make these buns. If your flour does not contain xantham gum, simply add a teaspoon to your flour mixture. You can store this flour in an airtight container in your pantry for up to 6 months.
Tips, tricks and substitutions
- If you don’t have self-rising flour, feel free to use all-purpose flour and add 2 teaspoons of baking powder and an additional 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
- You can easily make these gluten-free dinner rolls using GF self-rising flour or make your own by mixing gluten-free flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Just make sure your flour contains xantham gum and if it doesn’t, just add a teaspoon to your flour mixture.
- I made these pull-apart rolls the Parker House style because that’s what we always loved growing up, but you can easily roll out the dough rounds on a baking sheet for individual round rolls.
- For crispier browned tops on the rolls, make an egg wash using a lightly whipped large egg and brush the tops of the rolls before baking.
- To make these buns more flavorful, you can add grated cheese as well as garlic and fresh herbs.
- These would also make great breakfast rolls with added sausage, eggs, and cheese!
Preparation and storage
To prepare : You can easily prepare the dough in advance and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator until one week. This dough is also great for pizza so you can keep extra dough for various uses.
Tidy: You can store leftover baked rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for 4 to 5 days, but I recommend enjoying them as fresh as possible as they tend to become soft after a few days. Feel free to reheat the rolls in the microwave for a few seconds to soften them again.
Freeze: You can also freeze these rolls for up to 3 months in your freezer. When ready to enjoy, first thaw them overnight in the refrigerator, then wrap them in foil on a baking dish and reheat them in a 350 degree F oven for about 10 minutes.
