OF LIMBO – ARTIST SPOTLIGHT AND UNIQUE REVIEW
The formidable Californian group, Limbo, have just released an aggressive new single titled “California Demon.” We first met the band when we interviewed Jake Davies (Vocals/Guitar) in 2022 (see below). With his brother Luke (Guitar/Vocals), the Davies clan delivers crazy tracks full of infectious riffs, destructive vocals and over-the-top attitude. Limbo produces tracks that attack the listener with groove-laden cadences filled with heavy yet melodic beauty. The brothers are originally from Melbourne, Australia, but currently call Long Beach, California home. their house.
These boys know how to party. Every live performance is a spectacle. They make sure everyone in the audience dives deep into the raging rock they pose. They have opened for such impressive luminaries as Wolfmother, Hinder, Buckcherry and Joyous Wolf. Limbo delivers high-energy antics paired with cheeky musical hustle. Additionally, the Davies brothers constantly attack with volleys of molten sonic blasts. And leave no prisoners.
Their new single is no exception. “California Demon” wears the Limbo brand of incendiary songs, tenacious guitars and a totally killer backbeat. The rhythm is dark and dangerous. The guitars rage with intensity. The vocals are totally menacing and the bass line is pulverizing. The subject brings to life the old story of selling one’s soul to the devil in order to gain the fame one craves. Speaking about the “California Demon”, Luke Davies explains:
“The song explores the concept of ‘selling your soul for fame and fortune’, but in a literal sense. As if the devil is real and young, innocent and corruptible people come to Hollywood and sell their souls to become a star. There is a large portion of the population, like our conspiracy theory-loving uncle, who believes this to be 100% fact/reality. He sends us videos of stars in interviews implying that they have sold their souls, or the latest performances at the Grammy Awards, etc. of Sam Smith or mutterings of rappers disguised as Satan. Our uncle doesn’t believe it’s just a show. He thinks it’s some sort of televised satanic ritual. It’s a concept that we always found perfect for a rock song. An innocent young girl arrives in Hollywood with wide eyes and high hopes, only to discover that she must sacrifice much more than she bargained for…HER SOUL!
The song was recorded at Fab Factory Studios and produced by Mike Pepe (Taking Back Sunday, Plain White T’s), with mixing and mastering done by Grammy winner Jett Galindo. The music video for “California Demon” was directed by Tony Vercelli and filmed at Baur Films in Long Beach and Nuvisions Studios in Santa Ana. It was produced by Todd Grilli of 4th Street Productions. Speaking of the video, LimboJake Davies says:
“Yes, we actually set Luke’s guitar on fire while he was playing it at the end. We had to spray Luke with fire retardant spray and pray to sweet baby Jesus that he wouldn’t get 3rd degree burns. It was really very sketchy at times! In a few takes, I had to run with a wet blanket to put out the flames..”
Limbo is a band that is on the verge of breaking up. They have everything you need. Powerful songs full of tumultuous chaos. “California Demon” only adds to the mystique of Limbo. All you have to do is check out their debut tracks to realize the full extent of their immersive sonic devastation. Just listen to “Lets Go”, “Nicotine” or their reinvented cover of Beastie Boy’s “Fight For Your Right” to discover their crazy elegance. You will not regret it.
