Hi Barbie.
Given that it was the #1 movie in theaters of 2023 – grossing an incredible $1.4 billion worldwide – most of you reading this have probably already seen it. Greta Gerwig barbie. Maybe you’ve seen it more than once. Probably a few of you have seen it more than five times.
If you haven’t seen it, or are ready to watch it a sixth time, you can now do so at home, or really anywhere, as long as you have permission Max. application. Starting today, December 15, barbie is available for streaming.
The movie stars Margot Robbie like this classic iconic Barbie who lives in Barbieland (think giant, life-size versions of Barbie DreamHouse and all the other Barbie playsets) surrounded by many other Barbies, played by Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon, and more. And always around them are the Kens: Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and above all Ryan Gosling like “Beach Ken” who has a serious inferiority complex due to the fact that “beach” isn’t even really a job.
When Robbie’s Barbie is first struck by dark thoughts about death and her mortality, she must travel to the “real” world to investigate the cause of this strange disturbance in Barbieland. (Ken joins in.) She also attracts the attention of Mattel (the company that makes Barbie dolls and produced this movie) as well as its bumbling CEO (Will Ferrell).

The timing is good for renewed interest in the film, as barbie looks set to score plenty of Oscar nominations in early 2024. (He already has nine Golden Globe nominations and 18 Critics Choice Award nominations.) While barbie I haven’t made my personal list of the best movies of 2023, I really thought it was worth watching. As I wrote in my goodbye…
It’s to Gerwig’s credit that she managed to make a Mattel-approved Barbie movie that actually considers the ramifications of these issues, as well as subplots about feminism, patriarchy, and toxic masculinity. This is a film that attempts to tackle the big questions surrounding Barbie and use them to say something about gender roles in today’s society. This isn’t just a lavish advertisement for Barbie dolls.
barbie is now available on Max.
